National Safe Boating Week is coming up May 17 - 23. Chet Geist, our
safety committee chairman, has mentioned posters - we're probably
going
to start seeing his safety posters at the marinas.
Al Hitchcock reports that his group has already done 42 Vessel Safety Checks at "Just For Fun" and then they followed up with another 20 VSC's at Lakeway Marina. Our new COOP Charting chairman, Clint O'Connor, is sailing his trimaran to Key West and will be out of pocket a couple of weeks. He will have news of our July 26 charting event in Port Isabel. We wish him luck on his trip to Florida. I'm still new at this job but I plan to meet with the LCRA and Parks & Wildlife boating safety folks. I will report on their activities and any interaction we might have with them in the coming year. |
I hope to see you at the Surf & Turf on 24 May!

Saturday, May 17th, is the day for our next America’s Boating Course
class. The class will be at Travis County West Service Center, 4501
RR 620 North at Mansfield Dam. It is from 9 AM until 5 PM. If you
know a boater that is interested, have them leave a message on our
Call Notes number, 512-343-BOAT, to pre-register.
Congratulations to Jim Harrison. He has received his grade of Advanced Pilot. He completed AP in January, but to receive AP he also had to complete Seamanship which he did this April. It’s time for Engine Maintenance. Charles Strong almost has the classroom ready. It’s located at 6105 Hudson Bend Road. The first class will be on Saturday, May 31st, from 9 AM until 12 Noon. The next class date is Saturday, June 7th, also from 9 AM until 12 Noon. Bring your overalls and "Go-Jo" for clean up, because you will be tearing down an engine. You must have your Engine Maintenance text before class starts so that you can read ahead. If you still need a text, contact Charles at 266-1638 or Christine Geist at 327-0928. P/D/Lt/C Christine G. Geist, SN
I am pleased to announce the addition of Max Werkenthin to the Bartz Committee. Max will certainly bring a lot of APS history and knowledge to this committee. Thanks for agreeing to serve. Charles Strong, Chairman |

From the Treasurer’s Desk:
Just as a reminder the annual dues renewal is underway. We adopted the Anniversary Billing system with USPS again this year. You should have received your dues renewal notice and invoice from USPS by now, if not please contact USPS at 1-888-367-8777 or email Bob Little at blittle@austin.rr.com. We have set a goal of 100% dues renewal; we are counting on you for renewal and prompt payment. The easiest way to pay is to return the invoice to USPS with your payment or you can pay on-line with a credit card at www.usps.org/dues. Do not mail your dues payments to Bob, but rather to USPS. You should have received an initial billing, and if you do not pay it you will receive a reminder billing 30 days after the initial billing. If you do not pay 90 days after the initial billing, you will be considered nonrenewed. For new members, you may not see your renewal billing until the 12-month anniversary date of your initial dues. If you have any questions or need for assistance please contact Bob Little, Squadron Treasurer. May promises to be an exciting month for APS members. The 7th Annual Surf-N-Turf party will be held at the Strong’s lake house on Saturday May 24. See the Flyer for details. If you'd like to volunteer to help set-up, cook, and clean up, please drop me a line at kbf@austin.rr.com or via phone 512-459-3203. I am also trying to organize some recruiting activities that aim to network with our colleagues and friends. The plan is provide a brief introduction to the USPS and the APS at member’s workplaces or at group gatherings. Please let me know if you have a suggestion for a place. Lt/C Karl Fisher, AP

In the years that I have been in the Power Squadron, I have been amazed by the people that come and go and by the ones that stay. The ones that stay, have been the ones that have taken leadership roles and their dedication is always inspiring. One such person is Allan Hitchcock. Allan joined the Power Squadron and even though he was not an avid boater, was interested in learning something new. Allan went on to serve as Commander and has held many positions since then including the position he now holds – Chairman, Vessel Safety Committee. He has done an excellent job in his position and Austin was number three in the district last year out of 14 squadrons. Allan’s chronologic age might be older than mine, but he is certainly 30 years younger in mind and spirit. If you could observe him inspecting boats – climbing in and out – he is, to use kid’s terminology, awesome. One of the benefits of people staying in the squadron a long time is the many lasting friendships you form and I consider Allan one of mine. Thanks Allan for doing a great job. Charles Strong, Past District Commander

The new Squadron By Laws, as amended through 10 April 2008, are now in effect. These By Laws were approved by the membership at our February meeting and have now been given final approval by National Committee on Rules. Anyone desiring a copy can get one by emailing me and I will send you an electronic copy. My email remains chetg@austin.rr.com.
